Students interested in a career in music and entertainment may consider a new program offered by the radio-television-film department.

A music business course is being taught in the Longwith Radio, Television and Film Building for the first time this semester.

It is the first course toward an Associate in Applied Science in music business.

The two-year program will train students to work in various areas of the entertainment business, including nightclubs, record labels, media outlets, music publishing, satellite radio and Web casting.

Professor Fred Weiss said students had expressed an interest in the program, which is similar to Austin Community College's commercial music management degree plan.

Music classes will include American music, music theory and music appreciation while the business aspect of the program will focus on the music industry with courses in accounting, management, audio and recording production, entertainment law and advertising.

Eighteen students are enrolled in MUSB 1305, Survey of the Music Business, taught by Weiss this fall. The course will be offered again in the spring along with MUSB 1301, Entertainment Law.

Students also will work with local musicians and venues, professional audio equipment and in their final semester, intern with a music business to gain experience and demonstrate competency in the field, Weiss said.

Local recording studios sometimes offer eight-week, hands-on courses, and comparable courses had been offered through continuing education, but no degree plan was available, he said.

The department's advisory board approved the program in the spring, and approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board came last month, Weiss said.

"Retail, designing, engineering, installation and consulting are all career options," said Rick Hernandez, a member of the advisory board and a systems consultant with Hermes Music. "You can make a living at this."

Students interested in the music business program may contact Weiss at 210-733-2798 or visit the RTF Website at www.accd.edu/sac/rtf.
