The Ranger places in best all-around non-daily

The Ranger was awarded third place in Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper among two- and four-year colleges with an enrollment of more than 10,000 students in Texas and Oklahoma. The two states make up Region 8 of the Society of Professional Journalists which conducts the annual Mark of Excellence Awards competition. Full story

Protocol promotes chain-of-command conflict management

On April 22, President Robert Zeigler emailed a professional protocol statement to all employees at this college discouraging voicing their opinions at the Citizens to be Heard portions of regular Alamo College Board of Trustees meetings. The email was discussed at a Faculty Senate meeting May 1 in Room 120 of the visual arts center. According to Zeigler’s email, groups have not been effectively using the citizens to be heard agenda item. Full story

Spring Splash soaks students in the mall

Students had the opportunity to blow off some steam before finals during Spring Splash Wednesday in the mall. The event was hosted by Student Government Association and sponsored by Tobin Lofts. It consisted of an inflatable maze in which students could throw water balloons and shoot water guns at one another. Laura Belalcazar, Student Government Association commissioner, said the event was “basically for students to be stress free before finals.” Full story

Course evaluations provide feedback, lead to improvements

With the end of the semester and finals comes time to complete course evaluations. At the end of each semester, students receive through ACES email a course evaluation survey enabling them to give anonymous feedback. “Instructors can get a sense of what worked well, what didn’t work, what they can improve; that kind of thing,” Dr. David Wood, dean of performance excellence, said. Faculty Senate officers announced

In its final meeting of the semester, Faculty Senate elected officers for the 2013-2014 academic year. Senate Chair Larry Rosinbaum, a business professor, opened the floor for nominations for the positions of chair, vice chair and secretary. Senate Secretary Isabel Garcia, an architecture professor, was nominated for chair, but declined. Full story

May 10 incident in Candler reclassified as assault by contact

The responding officer’s speculation was inaccurate.

The most serious charge for an incident Friday afternoon in Candler Physical Education Center would be assault by contact, not sexual assault as reported by The Ranger Online, district police Chief Don Adams said Wednesday. Full story

Fredstock rocks Saturday in honor of professor

The third-annual Fredstock is expected to be even better than past years because it is on Saturday, instead of during the school week. This year, music business program Coordinator Donnie Meals, who directs Fredstock, said the event will spill over from Lot 7 onto Courtland Place, which will be closed between North Main Avenue and Howard Street during the event. The dance floor was a magnet to dancers Saturday at GALA’s second Spring Fling in Loftin Student Center. DJ John Coronado played what he called mixed audience motivational music. Full story

¡Viva Fiesta!

Fiesta, the most anticipated citywide celebration, is around the corner. Fiesta is a 10-day celebration throughout the city that includes parades, carnivals and other cultural events. It will begin Thursday and will run until April 28. The event began in 1891 with a Battle of Flowers as a way to honor those involved in the Battle of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto for Texas Independence. Full story

Dance classes to perform in scholarship benefit May 10

Students from this college’s dance program will demonstrate a collection of dances at 7:30 p.m. May 10 in the auditorium of McAllister Fine Arts Center. More than 125 students from nine classes, including modern dance, jazz, ballet, flamenco, tap, dance performance and country, will perform. “You’ll see them perform tap, ballet, jazz, country and western, flamenco and maybe even some hip-hop,” George Ann Simpson, kinesiology and dance professor, said. Rangers blank Roadrunners 5-0

The Ranger pitcher allowed only three hits in a seven-inning shutout.

The San Antonio Rangers dominated both mound and plate, defeating the Roadrunners of the University of Texas at San Antonio 5-0 Saturday at Cornerstone baseball field. Joe Gonzales, liberal arts freshman and Ranger starting pitcher, did not allow the Roadrunners to get into the game. “I tried mixing things up and keeping them off balance,” Gonzales said. Between his fastball, curve and change-up, the Roadrunners could not figure Gonzales out. “I’m a contact pitcher,” he said. “I make the defense work.” Full story

Where will we park?

There is no doubt parking will be a problem for the fall semester, or rather, for yet another semester. With the new parking garage opening eight months after the opening of Tobin Lofts, residents of the lofts could park in the college’s existing parking garage. Full story

E-books not functional

Faculty members may soon be required to use one textbook per course. One option would be for faculty to use an e-book instead of a textbook. Some professors have already switched to e-books. For students who don’t have the money to purchase or rent an e-book, it will be difficult to keep up with class work. Full story
