Tech gurus, break out the mice and keyboards, because the campus's computer information systems department will host the spring 2008 Open Source Fest during spring break.

Collaborating with San Antonio Linux User's Group and X-otic Computer Systems of San Antonio, the computer information system department is hosting the event celebrating computing technologies.

The term "open source" is a set of principles and practices on how to write software. The most important use is the original source code is openly available.

The definition was created by Bruce Perens and Eric Raymond and currently maintained by the Open Source Initiative.

It stresses the meaning of the term of not only acquiring the source code, but also having the right to use it.

If the latter is denied, the license is categorized as a shared source license.

The Open Source Fest will be conducting various demonstrations on a variety of topics such as business, scientific and recreational uses for such well-known operating systems as Unix, Linux, BSD, Apache and similar software.

Steve Kolars, chair of the computer information systems department, said he hopes the event accomplishes "training, as a community service. With the newbies session, we introduce people to Linux, give them a few skills, and start them on their way ... This will be about the 12th year we have hosted this event."

The event will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday-March 21 and also at 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 22 in Room 213A of the Nail Technical Center.
