If you want to put a little green in your pocket, stop by the San Antonio College Bookstore to sell back your books.
There is a method to the bookstore's madness, and it is done by a specific process.
The bookstore is owned by Follett.
Faculty members place their book orders for their classes by Oct. 15 for the spring semester.
The deadline for the fall semester is April 15.
"There is a misconception from teachers - if they keep the same books they do not have to reorder books, but they do," Amy Turpin, manager of the San Antonio College Bookstore said Oct. 10.
"We do buy back books all year-round, but the best prices are around the finals," she said. The week of final exams twice a year is the big buy back.
The bookstore sets up trailers outside the store and the back of the store. The bookstore encourages students to keep their books to study for their finals but the bookstore will buy them back any time.
"A lot of the students try to sell back their books ahead of time, sometimes a month into class," she said. "They may think teachers are not using it. They will get the market price, which is up to 30 percent at this time.
"If they wait around finals, they may get up to 50 percent of what they paid if it is used for the upcoming semester."
The condition of the book is also a deciding factor. Books will not be bought back if they are water damaged, loose leafed, marked with answers, workbooks, or written in. They will buy back books from any store.
The computer tells the employee how many books are needed at any given time. They will not buy back old editions.
The store stocks about 1,200 titles on the floor.
For a full refund, the deadline is two weeks after the first day of class, providing the book is in the same condition in which it was purchased. The receipt of the purchased book tells the bookstore if it was purchased new or used.
The store's Web site also gives general information about the condition of a book being sold back, course materials ordered, overstocks and current editions not being used on campus, and online buybacks.
