Staff Council and Faculty Senate will distribute books to school children at “Book Fiesta” 2 p.m. April 27 at Margil Elementary.
Launched in 2014, Book Fiesta is one of three annual projects by Staff Council, which adopts a different school each year.
The other two projects are providing school supplies in the fall and delivering presents in the winter.
Staff Council collected $3,000 worth of books through profits from its Scholastic Book Fair this semester and will donate them to the Book Fiesta, said Carrie Hernandez, senior student success specialist.
They also will distribute other gently used books donated for the fiesta.
“We sold over $6,000 worth of books at our book fair,” Hernandez said “We were able to pull $3,000 worth of books off the shelf.”
Members of Staff Council and Faculty Senate will deliver the books to Margil Elementary at 1:30 p.m.
Students in grades pre-kindergarten through second will celebrate with a float parade at 2 p.m.
The students will take the floats they created through the hallway and into the cafeteria.
After the parade, President Robert Vela will read a book to the students. Students in every grade will receive a book, Hernandez said.
Last year was the first time Staff Council conducted the “Book Fiesta,” and it went smoothly, student success specialist Dee Dixon said.
“Will Rogers Elementary School was the school we adopted last year, and the Book Fiesta went well,” Dixon said.
