The speech communication program is continuing a series of workshops on ways to improve writing and delivering speeches occurring in September and October.
“Support Your Claim,” will be 2 p.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday in Room 203 of McAllister Fine Arts Center.
Speech communication Coordinator Jolinda Ramsey, adviser to this college’s speech team, will discuss ways a student should go about finding research for speech topics.
“This workshop will give the student the tools to be able to look up information the support their claims when it comes to making a speech or even doing a paper,” Ramsey said.
“The workshop is based on supportive material, whether it would be looking up statistics, charts, etc.”
The workshops are targeted to speech communication students, but the series is open to anyone.
“This workshop is open to all the students who want to attend and learn tips,” she said.
The advice that Ramsey gives to her students in her speech classes are what she calls the “3 P’s: prepare, practice, be positive.”
These upcoming workshops can be helpful to student because these are basic skills used by a college student whether a student needs to prepare a presentation in class or write a paper and needs to dig up research on the subject, she said.
Ramsey reminds students that even speech professors do not start off as
professional speakers.
“There is going to be that hint of nervousness in the beginning, but soon it will come natural to someone who keeps on practicing.”
That is why it public speaking is known to be the No. 1 fear that people have, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
Other workshops are “It’s as Easy as I, 2, iii” on organization and outlining led by Adjunct Dick O’Neal Sept. 26; “Say it with Style” on effective delivery by Professor Jim Mammarella Oct. 3 in Room 203; “Help me! I have an Interview” with Ashley Click Oct. 10; and “Interpersonal Communication” Oct. 17 with fine arts Chair Jeff Hunt.
All are 2 p.m.-3 p.m. in Room 203 of McAllister.
