On Saturday Houston Street downtown will be covered in chalk during the ninth annual Chalk It Up 10 a.m.-4 p.m. sponsored by Artpace.

Deputy Director Mary Heathcott invites students to grab some chalk and create artistic drawings for everyone to enjoy.

Hundreds of people are expected to attend the free family event that celebrates art and creativity.

Artpace is a nonprofit contemporary art center that supports educational programs that help artist express their creativity. It also sponsors exhibitions.

Artpace was founded in 1993 by the late Linda Pace, a local businesswoman and artist.

Contemporary artists were chosen by Artpace to create murals on Houston Street sideewalks.

Among those who will showcase their talents are Sara Frantz, Shannon Gowen, Rigoberto Luna, Juan Miguel Ramos and Katie Pell.

The community is invited to bring their imagination on Saturday to participate and help complete a giant mural on Houston Street, Heathcott said.

Food, music and a “kidzone” with activities for children are planned.

“Chalk it up is made possible by community support, and this includes the valuable support of volunteers,” Heathcott said.

Heathcott invited students who would like to volunteer to contact her by email at education@artpace.com.
