District police give the all clear for students to return to class at about 12:55 p.m. today. A gas leak in Lot 27, at Evergreen and Lewis street called for the evacuation of the nursing complex, Oppenheimer, and the empowerment center at about noon today.

A gas leak occurred at about noon today in Lot 27 at West Evergreen and Lewis, Cpl. Marisa Saccio of the Alamo Colleges Police Department, confirmed.

Construction work in the parking lot had caused the leak, she said.

Students, faculty and staff were evacuated from Oppenheimer Academic Center, the empowerment center and the nursing complex at about noon, Sgt. G. Perez said.

At least three Alamo College police vehicles and one vehicle from the San Antonio Fire Department responded to the scene.

At about 12:45 p.m., Officer Rudy Robles, who was directing traffic at the intersection of West Park and Maverick Street, asked students who still had class to clear the area and go toward Loftin Student Center.

One of the projects being completed in Lot 27 includes renovation of the empowerment center’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, public relations director Vanessa Torres said.

An emergency notification system alerted students, faculty and staff at about 12:30 p.m.

The evacuation order was cleared at about 1 p.m., and students, faculty and staff were allowed to return to the three buildings.
