After 18 weeks of training, education sophomore Mary Campbell, also a clerk in early childhood studies, says she is ready to run the full Rock 'N' Roll marathon Sunday.
The 26.2-mile run will begin on Broadway at the Lion's Field Club, cross Brackenridge Park to San Pedro Avenue, south to North St. Mary's Street to Mission Espada and end at the Alamodome.
This is the third marathon Campbell will run and the largest, which she is excited about.
"I started in 2000 with (Instructor Dawn) Brooks and ran a race for extra credit," she said, adding it was a 5K race.
Next she entered a 10K, a half marathon, and is looking forward to a full marathon Sunday.
Campbell said she has been training since July, a grueling 18-week schedule of six days running and swimming with one day of rest while increasing her weekly mileage.
The first week she ran 26 miles, the second 27 and the third 31. By the 15th week, she ran 50 miles.
Campbell said that after running the San Antonio Marathon in 2003, she was excited to do another and signed up for the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in November 2007, paid half-price for entry and is excited to have all the supporters behind her.
"It's hard work, but you know your work is paid off when you finish in less time than you expected," she said.
The music is what interested Campbell. She said she heard about this particular marathon happening in other cities and was excited to be a part of this one.
"My estimated time is 4 1/2 hours, but I want to do better, about four hours and 15 minutes or sooner."
Her colleagues and family are supportive and say they will be in the crowd Sunday cheering her on.
The sold-out marathon will feature more than 55 bands from different genres starting at 7:25 a.m. Thirty thousand runners are expected to race on foot and in wheelchairs.
