Under the shade of a large red tent by the mall's grassy knoll, two Student Government Association officers and two commissioners shared their agenda Wednesday in a forum that drew a few students who wrote their concerns on comment cards.
As the members of the association waited for anybody to come up and voice an opinion, premed sophomore Zane Plemmons pleaded with students nearby to come up to the microphone and let others know what was on their mind.
"I hate government and I hate politics, but this has been a little more interesting than I thought it would be," Plemmons said of being a commissioner-at-large.
President Matt Williams, international studies sophomore, let students know that a "Go Green" Committee and a Film Committee are in the works and that any student can get involved.
He also brought up the issue of the parking garage under construction and said officials have not decided whether they will allow only faculty and staff to use it.
He referred to the garage southeast of Chance Academic Center that will have 1,100 spaces. It is scheduled to open in January 2008.
President Robert Zeigler told The Ranger Thursday that the parking garage hasn't been assigned to a certain group.
"Well, the Parking Committee hasn't yet decided on who gets to park in the garage, but they are going to have a decision very soon. They are going to evaluate the situation and their options," Zeigler said.
The Parking Committee is composed of eight representatives from groups such as Faculty Senate, Staff Council, Student Government and others, he said.
At the forum, pre-dental sophomore Mary Perez gave a history of the association, saying the group held elections for the first time in four years in January.
"Students need to speak to us. We're their voice and if nobody speaks to us on certain issues, we can only voice what we feel and think," she said.
"Anybody can get involved by simply contacting us and giving us their e-mail addresses. What we're trying to do out here is just get a list of people's contact information so that we can keep in touch and see what their opinions are."
The association members collected the comment cards but did not address their contents during the forum.
Math sophomore Sara Gabel, commissioner-at-large, attended as well as Tyler Archer, assistant coordinator of student activities, and adviser Dawn Elmore-McCrary.
The association meets at 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays in Room 256 of Loftin Student Center. The meetings are open to the public.
Students who want to voice opinions or contribute to student government can e-mail Williams at chlorinediver@yahoo.com, Elmore-McCrary at delmorem@accd.edu, or adviser Suzanne Martinez at sumartin@accd.edu.
