February is a month of acknowledgement for the achievements by black Americans that had a significant role in American History.

Black History Month originated half of a century after the 13th Amendment abolished the inhumane act of slavery in the U.S. as a weeklong celebration. It was until the 1960's the festivities of Black History Month started to evolve into a month long celebration.

This year's theme for Black History Month is black women that have shaped the United States and its history.

Since 1976, every United States president has officially recognized February as Black History Month.

The events at this college are sponsored by the Black Student Alliance and follow the theme "black women that have shaped the United States and its history."

Last year ACCD had events like lectures on the Relevance of African-American history, a Buffalo Soldiers exhibit, and a read in of "The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass."

This year, art professor Marleen Hoover inaugurated the college's observance of Black History month with, "Homage to My Young Black Sisters," a presentation about Elizabeth Catlett Feb. 2 in the visual arts.
