The speech team, which placed eighth out of 76 colleges in national competition last year, has four tournaments this spring to prepare for the return to nationals.

They will have plenty of practice with tournaments, a retreat and two evenings of reader's theater.

The reader's theater consists of a written script on a theme. The play is called "B(u)y the Book." It focuses on societies' readiness to search for answers in self-help books rather than searching inside.

This college will host the semester's first tournament today through Sunday in the theater in McCreless Hall. The first event begins at 1 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

The tournament will feature speech communications sophomore Melissa Ruiz and interior design sophomore Evelyn Stephens performing "Living Out" by Lisa Lumer in dramatic duo interpretation from 7:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. today.

"The TIFA tournament is really important to us," Ruiz explained. "Tons of four-year universities show up and bring their best material. We know it is important to step up our game, especially since we are hosting the tournament."

Instructor Jolinda Ramsey coaches the team of four returning members - Ruiz, Stephens, music sophomore Taylor McCartney and communications sophomore Melanie Peay - and three new members - music sophomore Joseph Holloway, education sophomore Laura Cabaniss and radio-television-film sophomore Steve Williams. Last fall, the speech team participated in three tournaments of 15 colleges and universities. In the two-part Bayou City Swing tournament in Houston, the speech team placed second in team individual events sweepstakes and third overall in individual events sweepstakes. The individual awards of the first part include Williams who placed second in poetry interpretation. Peay placed fifth in informative speaking. Ruiz and Stephens placed third in duo interpretations. Stephens placed first in dramatic interpretations.

The individual awards for the second part consist of Williams who placed first in duo interpretations with Cabaniss and fifth place in poetry interpretation.

Peay placed sixth in persuasive speaking and fourth in informative speaking. Ruiz placed fifth in duo interpretation with Stephens and third in informative speaking.

Stephens placed second in dramatic interpretation.

In early November, the speech team attended the fall Texas Intercollegiate Forensics Association tournament.

Individual awards were won by Williams who finished third in novice poetry interpretation and duo interpretation with Cabaniss.

Peay placed fifth in persuasive speaking. Ruiz placed second in duo interpretation with Stephens. Stephens placed eighth in prose interpretation. Holloway placed third in program oral interpretation and second in novice poetry interpretation.

Their last tournament was the fall Texas Community College Speech and Theater Association tournament at Kingwood College. The speech team won the highest honor in team awards, which were first place in individual events sweepstakes and overall sweepstakes.

Williams placed first in duo interpretation with Cabaniss and fourth in poetry interpretation. Peay placed second in persuasive speaking and informative speaking.

Ruiz placed first in informative speaking, fourth in prose interpretation, second in duo interpretation with Stephens and fourth in overall speaker.

Stephens placed first in dramatic interpretation, third in prose interpretation and third in overall speaker. Holloway placed first in program oral interpretation and fourth in poetry interpretation. Cabaniss placed fifth in prose interpretation.
