The Faculty Senate agenda was slim Wednesday but focused on budget, technology and the Termination of Tenured Faculty Appeals Committee.

The Budget and Finance Committee discussed a draft proposal that included ways to increase enrollment and keep the allotted budget at the college, including lapsed salaries.

It also called for instituting a nonrefundable registration fee to counter problems with late registration and purge dates for nonpayment.

The proposal calls for a re-evaluation of the practice of dual credit and a move of the costs of ADA compliance services to the district.

It further recommends small regular increases in tuition and fees and an end to duplication of services between the district and the colleges.

The resolution was not passed but will be voted on next Faculty Senate meeting March 1.

The Technology Committee provided an update on the problems plaguing PALS.

The Web interface program replaced the e-Portal system Jan. 2.

Many of the complaints that have lingered involve access to PALS from off-campus.

E-mail in WebCT also has created problems for faculty.

WebCT has a 4,000-character limit and the life span of e-mail is only three weeks.

Senate member and music Chair Jessica Howard said transferring PALS e-mail into Outlook Express would solve the mail life span problem.

Librarian Stephen Dingman said many of the problems with PALS are never reported to faculty. "If there is some problem, they don't fess up," Dingman said.

Senators suggested the information technology staff alert faculty as new problems arise.

A closed session was called at the end of the meeting to discuss the Termination of Tenured Faculty Appeals Committee.

Purcell said he was taking the senate's resolutions to his meeting with President Robert Zeigler Wednesday afternoon and the Appeals Committee meeting Thursday morning.

The Faculty Senate will meet at 2:15 p.m. March 1 in Room 120 of the visual arts center.
