Students can get free assistance in filing income tax returns this semester.
The Volunteers Income Tax Assistance program is offering free tax services from 1 p.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays and noon -4 p.m. Sundays through April 15 in Room 706 of Moody Learning Center.
Service learning Coordinator Audrey Grams said the service is free and open to the public.
Those wishing to file their tax returns need to bring a valid drivers license or photo ID, all W-2 forms or 1099 forms, their Social Security cards or individual taxpayer identification numbers for all family members. Those filing jointly must bring their spouse.
"They don't have to come here for assistance," Grams said. "They can call 211 and give their ZIP code to find a VITA program near them."
She said anyone whose income is less than $40,000 is eligible.
Business Professor Maria Davis said whether a student is living alone or with parents or guardian determines if a student can deduct tuition.
She said at the volunteer training, they stressed to ask students if they live at home and to make sure they talk to their parents about who is going to get the deduction.
"The parents come in and find out their child has received the deduction they could have had," Davis said.
If the student is living alone, the student can deduct tuition payments, especially if they have a child or care for someone else's child, Davis said.
