With less than two weeks left for filing for a position on the Alamo Community College District board of trustees, only one candidate has applied.
District 7 trustee and board Chairman Charles Conner has filed for the May 13 election, but neither of his two fellow board members whose terms expire have joined him. District 5 trustee Roberto Zarate and District 6 trustee Gene Sprague also are coming to the end of their terms.
Sprague has served on the board of trustees for 12 years while Zarate was appointed before running for election in 2004.
There are no term limits for the position.
Sprague chairs the Long-Range Planning Committee, and Zarate is chair of the Academic Accountability and Student Success Committee. On Feb. 21, the board approved early voting sites for May 1-9 as well as regular polling sites for the May 13 election and sites for a June 17 runoff if necessary.
Filing began Feb. 11 and will end at 5 p.m. March 13. Candidates must have been a resident for at least six months of the district in which they intend to run.
Candidates also must have been a Texas resident for a year. The election will be in conjunction with four school districts, two suburban city elections and Bexar County. The county is proposing the creation of an emergency services district.
Applications must be submitted by the deadline to Legal Affairs in Room 8 of Building C at Killen Center, 201 W. Sheridan Ave., San Antonio, TX 78204-1429. For more information, call 208-8014.
