The Student of the Month Program is an initiative between the Alamo Community College District board of trustees and the San Antonio Division of KB Home.

Winners will get a $500 award, a plaque and will be recognized at the regular board meeting. KB Home spokeswoman Cathy Teague said KB Home wants to invest in the community.

"Together with the ACCD, we can invest in human potential," Teague said.

Dr. Patricia Candia, chair of the district Student Affairs Council, said the idea came up because the district recognizes an Employee of the Month.

"The board would get to know our students," Candia said, adding trustees were so excited about the suggestion, they decided to match KB Home's $250 award.

Although the colleges have vastly different enrollment figures, the colleges have the chance to nominate two students per year for the award.

The award will be given 10 months per year, with no awards in July and August. As of the day after the fall census date, this college had an enrollment of 21,867, St. Philip's College 10,381, Northwest Vista College 9,296 and Palo Alto College 8,334.

Candia said changing this would need some discussion.

Adriana Contreras, executive assistant to the vice chancellor of administration, said Northeast Campus is also going to select two students for the award.

She said matching the enrollment numbers to the frequency of awards could be something that might be discussed, adding that this program is new.

Teague said KB Home had nothing to do with setting up the system for awards.

This college will select the Student of the Month in May. Names of nominees should be directed to Dean Joy Gates Black at 785-6202.
