Eminent domain affects all of us
When a taxing entity exercises eminent domain, threatens to use or even mentions it as a reserved power, it is of utmost importance to every member of the public, taxpayers and property owners alike
A buyer cannot guess a property's potential value to the government.
And while some owners may receive an adequate reimbursement, others lack the bargaining power to demand a fair price.
No matter what, lives are upended in the name of progress and to benefit the public.
Those condemning land should be sensitive to the displaced.
They should remember those being bought out of a home and the memories forged there.
The district did well to adjust the closing date to fit homeowner Wanda Mokry's needs.
Mokry's 40 years at her home the district bought to demolish for the Northeast college made it difficult to transition to a new life.
As students, we should not forget that sometimes people have to make major sacrifices to make our education possible.
