The presentation of a poster will take place during an open house March 10 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the women's center and adult re-entry program.
The ceremony will be open to all from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the women's center in Room 177B in the Balditt Counseling Complex in Moody Learning Center
Posters will be available to the public at no cost in the fall as the center celebrates the quarter-century milestone.
The poster was created by business management sophomore Margaret Peachey, who won a $500 scholarship in a contest sponsored by the center in November.
The artist is using the scholarship this semester, said Debbie Middleton, continuing education specialist.
The Ranger reported in November that the contest sought the creation of a poster that would symbolize the past 25 years of the women's center and what it stands for.
"To me, the poster signifies the beauty and possibilities of being a woman," Middleton said Tuesday.
Center Coordinator Helen Vera invites everyone to the open house.
"This is a chance for students to receive information on the center and see what we're all about," Vera said.
Vera hopes to display a proclamation from the city of San Antonio to be issued Thursday lauding the center for its 25 years of service.
The women's center has been serving women at this college since 1981.
The center was created to provide help to women who aspired a higher education and wanted to do something with their life but needed help doing so.
"Our job is to work with the students and motivate them," Vera said.
Twenty-five years later, the women's center has expanded with the addition of the adult re-entry program in 1997.
The program works with students who need support with re-entering college.
In 2003, the Alamo Workforce Development Board presented the Connections program an "Excellence Through Innovation Award."
The Connections program, offered through the adult re-entry program, offers students short-term training in the medical and administrative field.
The women's center offers scholarships and counseling on academics, parenting and crisis situations.
As of the 2004-05 academic year, the women's center estimated 30,000 contacts, including students using services and the center's outreach efforts, Vera said.
Along with the open house ceremony, the women's center is also preparing for two conferences.
The Young Women's and Young Men's Conference will be from 8:30 a.m-11:30 a.m. Saturday in the auditorium of McAllister Fine Arts Center.
The goal of the conference is to motivate high school juniors and seniors to receive a higher education, Vera said.
On May 23, the women's center will sponsor the fifth annual women's WE conference. WE stands for Women Empowered. This conference focuses on encouraging women to return to school to pursue a higher education.
