Students interested in theater can apply for one of five $300 scholarships and an opportunity to learn firsthand about productions.

This scholarship's recipients will perform theater duties in five main areas - house manager, promotions and publicity manager, box office manager, scene shop intern and costume manager.

This semester all of the five scholarships were awarded to students majoring in theater, Jeff Hunt, chair of the theater and speech communication department, said.

The goal is to fill each of the positions, Hunt said. He added students can begin to apply for the fall scholarships in August.

This scholarship is for theater majors who maintain at least a 2.0 grade-point average. Recipients must agree to work a minimum of five hours per week.

One recipient of the scholarship in 2005 and 2006 was theater sophomore Brandy Roell.

She used the $300 to buy books, Roell said.

"I think I received the position of box office manager because I have a lot of theater experience," Roell said.

She added it is important to have people skills and social skills.

The box office manager has to sell tickets and deal with complaints from customers, Roell explained.

To apply, visit the theater and speech communications department in Room 125 of McAllister Fine Arts Center, call 733-2715 or e-mail Chair Jeff Hunt at jehunt@accd.edu.
