Preparing for any kind of exam starts on the first day of class, Counselor Irene Alvarado said.

When a student starts studying for an exam on the first day of class, it means the student will not have to cram the night before the test, she said.

"It takes a lot of effort and time to review for an exam," she said.

Students should take time a couple of days after a lecture to review class notes, handouts from the professor and the chapters, she said. They are not just reviewing, they are also studying.

Students who review everyday will consistently make better grades on the exam, she said.

She said there is not a magic number for how many hours a student should to study for an exam. However, there is a formula for preparing for a class students follow to succeed in their classes.

For every hour a student is in class, they should study a minimum of two hours a week. She said if a student is in a three-hour class, they should study six hours for that class.

Alvarado said if students are carrying 12 hours, they should be studying for 24 hours. That totals 36 hours, which is like a full-time job.

That formula works for academic classes like history, government, economic and math classes, but for extracurricular classes like physical education, students do not need to follow that formula.
