The Faculty Senate president of St. Philip's College settled with the district on Feb. 28 after two years of mediation.

Dee Joseph, information technology professor and 24-year veteran of the college, sued the district in 2004, claiming gender discrimination and discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

After a surgery in 2001, Joseph was diagnosed with sympathetic nerve syndrome.

According to a medical Web site, the rare disorder usually causes pain in one limb, but Joseph said she is in constant pain in all her limbs.

She is confined to a motorized scooter and uses voice-activated word processing software to avoid the pain of typing.

As her physical condition worsened, Joseph said she was denied the extra classes she was accustomed to teaching.

The special accommodations she requested, such as having a projector brought to her classroom, were ignored.

During a two-year period, three women transferred or resigned from the department.

Joseph said they were not treated as equals with the men in the department.

Neither of the two would comment on Joseph's allegations of sexism.

Joseph said she will be receiving ergonomic office equipment and $6,000 for her legal fees and has already received a new computer to replace a six-year-old unit.

Joseph declined to release the settlement, but a representative for Martha McCabe, general counsel for the district, said the settlement will be released during spring break.
