After almost four months of vacancy, the position of associate director of student life has finally been filled.
Gil Castillo, community liaison for the evening division, was hired on Tuesday, as the associate director of student life.
Meanwhile, another search is on for a director of student life.
In January, Darlene Curtis resigned as director after two months.
Castillo said he has not officially started at the office of student life because all the proper paperwork needs to be filled out so he can transfer.
As the associate director of student life, he will be getting a 10 percent pay raise, Castillo said.
He said he did not apply for the position for the money; he did it because he loves working in the office of student life.
He said he will find out in a couple of days when he will officially start.
President Robert Zeigler said Castillo was chosen from three candidates.
The search committee submitted three names to Dr. Joy Gates Black, dean of student affairs.
Interim Vice President Thomas Hoy, Black and Zeigler made the final decision.
Zeigler said because of Castillo's background in education, student life and his experience with this college and the district, he was the best candidate.
Castillo said he wants to sit down with the staff from the office of student life and see what they can and cannot do about promoting student activities but make it a team effort.
Castillo worked in the office of student activities for six years. He was the student government adviser and helped with clubs and organizations.
He said he wants to start planning activities and try to restart the Student Leadership Weekend.
Two students from each club or organization go on a weekend trip to learn of policies and procedures.
He also plans to acknowledge all of the students and advisers in clubs and organizations for all the good and hard work they do. He wants to thank the students for being professional and thank the advisers for steering them in the right direction.
However, he said at this time, he is unsure of how to acknowledge the clubs and organizations.
Student government also is on Castillo's priorities to get back on track.
"Student government goes in cycles," he said, adding student government has its bad and good years.
"The good years you are able to get great things."
When Castillo was the student government adviser, the students changed the financial aid policies resulting in larger awards and got the shuttle buses started.
Castillo said he is looking forward to working with the director of student life when one is found.
"We will work hand in hand in a positive way to make a win-win situation for student life," Castillo said.
