The music department's Side By Side Concert offers double the fun.
The concert of duets will unveil two Steinway Concert grand pianos, one purchased last year and one the college already owned that has been refurbished
"This is an unusual event because there will be two pianos on the stage side by side," said Dr. Jessica Howard, music and humanities chair. "And they are not just any pianos. They are 9 1/2- foot, top-of-the-line grand pianos, and we have two of them."
The evening and newly refurbished piano are dedicated to the late Majorie T. Walthall. She was the first chair of the music department.
The Marjorie T. Walthall Perpetual Charitable Trust Board donated the majority of the money to refurbish a vintage 1956 Steinway Concert Grand piano.
Dr. Robert Zeigler, college president, and the music department contributed the remainder.
The rest of the concert will feature a variety of pieces performed as duets by six faculty members.
The doubling doesn't end there.
"In honor of the event, we commissioned two original musical works for duo piano," Howard said. "And they will be premiered."
The composers are Professor Alice Gomez and Instructor Stephen Gollihar.
"The very last pieces will have two players on each piano for the grand finale," Howard said.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. April 4 in the auditorium of McAllister Fine Arts Center. It lasts an hour and a half with one intermission. A catered reception will follow in the lobby.
