Focusing its Saturday meeting on goals for 2006, the Adjunct Faculty Council identified pay raises, increased benefits and increased presence of the council throughout the district.

It has already accomplished much within the first year of its resurrection. One noticeable feat is its campaign to make this college and district aware of the meager wages and lack of benefits adjunct faculty are offered.

Representatives from Adjunct Faculty Council met with Faculty Senate Chair Jerry Purcell Wednesday to discuss including adjunct faculty in a pay raise proposal, council Chair Amanda Martin said.

Purcell said of the meeting Wednesday that they found "we had a lot in common" and hopes along with adjuncts to make a presentation to the district budget committee about faculty pay raises.

The council was also optimistic about its rescheduled meeting with acting Chancellor Daniel Derrico April 4. Among some of the things to be discussed at that meeting are leave of adjunct faculty, Martin said.

An election to fill two vacant positions and cull representatives for the Ways and Means and Critical Issues committees is already under way. Bylaws forbid council representatives to serve on the elections committees leaving math Lecturer Nancy Roell - who is a member-at-large - as the lone elections coordinator.

At the March 25 meeting, Roell said there are only two candidates who have nominated themselves for a position in the council.

"So far, the response has been no one has used the self-nomination forms," Roell said.

Nominations closed Thursday with nominees contacted today by Roell. Nominees will be able to campaign at the April 5 Faculty Fair in the Fiesta Room of Loftin.

A voting booth will be at the entrance of the fair with a laptop set up with directions on how cast ballots, Roell said. Voting will take place using PALS.

In the meantime, the Adjunct Faculty Council is focused on increasing awareness about the council through its Web site.

Radio-television-film Lecturer Gerald Davey said in the long term, the council should deal with the macro and micro issues for adjuncts at this college.

"We're not in this alone," Davey said.

The Adjunct Faculty Council's Web site is at www.accd.edu/sac/english/mcoffey/adjunct/.
