Starting Monday after a month of transition, Pat Terrell will be executive assistant to the president of the Northeast college. He was executive assistant to the chancellor for three years.

"I'm very enthusiastic about the prospect of being involved in starting a new community college in San Antonio," said Terrell, who lives near the new campus planned for a fall 2008 opening.

Terrell has worked in the district for 34 years and helped open Palo Alto College and the Northeast Campus. In the 13-14 years he was at Palo Alto, Terrell worked as the founding director of admissions and records and served as interim president and chair of the committee that hired President Ana "Cha" Guzman. He also was dean and interim vice president of student services and for 1 1/2 years, assistant to the president.

At the Northeast Campus, which will be integrated into the new Northeast college, he served as start-up coordinator and special projects assistant the chancellor. He also was chair of the committee that hired Dr. Eric Reno, president of the Northeast college.

"I like to do these types of things," he said. "Besides, I'm 62 years old; I've been around a long time."

At the new Northeast college, his responsibilities will include working as construction liaison and helping with accreditation of the new college and renovations of the Albertsons campus. "There's a lot of things that need to be done and not enough hands."

He'll be assisting the new vice presidents of academic affairs and student services, helping with the hiring process and assisting Reno with anything else he needs, Terrell said. "We have some top-notch people," he said. "If we want the 'A' team out there, we'll get it."

He's most looking forward to working with students and faculty. "I'm a student service person. That's my first love."

Reno said he's glad to have Terrell working with him. "He's got an unbelievable amount of expertise in building with the district," Reno said. "He knows people. He knows how to get things done and he's so highly respected with the district."

President Robert Zeigler said classes at the Northeast Campus will be through this college and St. Philip's College until fall 2007. There will still be SAC and St. Philip's students at the new college, however, because of financial aid. "We don't know if the Northeast College will be qualified for financial aid in 2007 or not," he said.

If the college is not qualified, financial aid will still be through the two sister colleges.

Acting Chancellor Daniel Derrico said Terrell will be sorely missed in the district offices, but he will be a valuable asset to the new college.
