A former student of this college is a newly appointed member of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, which helps Texas meet the goals of the state's higher education plan.
Elaine Mendoza, founder, president and chief executive officer of Conceptual Mindworks Inc., began a five-year term Jan. 25. Conceptual Mindworks provides scientific and technical support in the health care field for the private sector and Defense Department customers, specifically the U.S. Air Force.
President Robert Zeigler honored Mendoza with a reception March 23 in the visual arts center.
"I want to listen to your ideas and frustrations and help you work around barriers to do what you need to do," Mendoza told the group. "I'm here to get information on all the great things going on at SAC."
Mendoza attended this college for two summers in 1984 and 1985 and was enrolled in courses to fulfill requirements at Texas A&M University where she received a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering.
Mendoza strongly believes in the role of community colleges.
"It cannot be overstated enough," Mendoza said. "It's shown over time to be a gateway to either a great career or a four-year college."
Mendoza was picked by Gov. Rick Perry to serve on the Coordinating Board.
"The governor wanted a South Texas representative on the board," she said.
The San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce supported the appointment, Mendoza said.
