For 10 years, student poets have celebrated National Poetry Month by participating in the annual Alamo Community College District poetry competition.

This year's poetry celebration will take place from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday in the auditorium of the McAllister Fines Arts Center. The event is free.

"National Poetry Month is a chance to celebrate and appreciate beautiful ideas put together by words. Poetry is a healing and cleansing expression and should be appreciated," English Instructor Jane Focht-Hansen said.

First-, second- and third-place winners will receive cash prizes and certificates. The first-place winner will receive $125, second place $100 and third place $75.

Students winning the three top places and meriting honorable mention will read their poems to the audience at the event.

In previous competitions, poems were presented in a poetry slam in which students read aloud their poetry. Last year, students performed their poetry while being judged, said Dr. John Hammond, the college's public relations director.

This year, students will submit their poetry before the celebration, and winners will be notified Monday.

Planners hope the change in format will attract students who do not want to perform but would like to enter their poetry.

"Not all good writers are good performers so we don't want to leave out any talented writers," Focht-Hansen said. "Our goal is to broaden our audience."

Poets should write three poems on topics of the poet's choice with no more than 150 lines each. Judges, who are published poets, will critique each poem.

Judging is based on creativity, originality and overall expression skills.

After the presentation of winners, ACCD employees and other published poets will read their own poetry and discuss the importance of poetry.

"I'm hoping to get some funding to create a small publication out of the works of the participants to commemorate the art of poetry and to put the collection in the library to have for students to read and enjoy for years to come," Focht-Hansen said.

I really like the newspaper illustration. It seems to be unique in comparison to the other graphics shown in the Ranger. It is nice to see a traditional comic shown again. (Continued…)
