Plan ahead

Students wanting to take classes during Maymester, summer and flex sessions should think twice before they choose their classes.

Transfer center Coordinator Terry Walch said there are three things students should consider as they pick their classes for a short semester: their preference for class length, time constraints and learning styles.

"They should think about their learning style and look for classes available in Maymester," Walch said. "The planning tips apply to summer sessions, too."

Walch said students need to make sure they can devote the time and effort if they want to enroll in a Maymester class - classes that meet every day for three weeks. Students enrolling in Maymester are only allowed to enroll in one class.

She said if a student wants to take a developmental math course in Maymester, but they are only taking it as a refresher, then taking the course in Maymester would be a good idea.

But if the student is at a low level of a developmental course and the student needs more time between classes to learn the material, the student should not enroll in Maymester, Walch said.

She said if the student needs the class as a requirement for the major and needs to do well in that class, take the class in a regular 16-week semester rather than in a short semester.

Counselors are available on the first floor of Moody in the Balditt Counseling Complex to answer questions about signing up for classes, Walch said.
