On Oct. 19, the Student Services Activity Fee Committee approved funds of $50,000 for a 25-passenger minibus and $100,941 for renovations to Loftin Student Center.
These funds are from the activity fee fund of $472,000.
"This bus would only be used for student organizations and clubs," student life Director Jorge Posadas said.
Posadas explained that the college district's motor pool is shared by every college in the district and requires a 30-day notice before reserving a van.
Motor pool officials refused to comment to The Ranger.
"Because it is over $10,000, this also has to be approved by the board," he said. He also explained that because of the price, state guidelines require the committee to submit a request for purchase proposal to the district administration to forward to the board of trustees.
"An RFP is used for tax dollar purposes, which is odd because this particular fee doesn't come from taxpayers," Posadas said.
The activity fee is paid for by students at $1 per semester hour of enrollment.
"The district hasn't accepted a good definition of this fee," he said. Posadas also explained that the state doesn't require every college or university to have a student services activity fee, but if the school does, they must regulate it according to the state.
Renovations for Loftin Student Center were approved on the basis that it is not as visually pleasing or comfortable as a student center should be.
"They (the committee) really want to make the center a beautiful place where students will enjoy being," Posadas said.
The labor cost for renovations will be paid for by the district.
Additional approved funding for new furniture and equipment in Loftin totaled $64,000, $20,000 of which would be used to buy new computers for Bailey's Cybercafe.
Posadas is hoping to improve the services provided through the offices of student life by hiring an assistant coordinator of student leadership and activities with the activity fee. The funds approved for the new hire are budgeted at $36,000 and mostly cover staffing costs and benefits.
