The opening session in the auditorium of the International Conference Center at the University of the Incarnate Word brought parents and siblings to the workshop.

Workshop Director Irene Abrego welcomed the crowd and explained the rule the students will follow during the 13 days.

After the rules session, students and workshop faculty and staff joined in icebreakers to get to know each other.

Then, the work began as students shared ideas for stories for You S.A., the workshop newspaper.

The Urban Journalism Workshop has continued every year since its creation in 1985, thanks to countless volunteers and sponsors.

The Urban Journalism Workshop began when the late W.B. "Dub" Daugherty amd Professor Emeritus Chet Hunt applied for a Dow Jones Newspaper Fund grant to host a workshop for minority high school journalists.

The workshop was one of the first journalism workshops for high school students at a two-year college. Sixteen students participated.

Sponsored by the San Antonio Light, the San Antonio Express-News, San Antonio Press Inc. and the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, the workshop slowly became a great success.

Beginning with only five sponsors including the college, the workshop has grown to having 11 sponsors and assistance from area journalism associations.

The term "boot camp" had been a common term used by the counselors to describe the amount of work students put into the workshop.

Former workshop participants now work in a variety of media in newspapers and television stations across the nation.

Workshop participants were selected in the spring. Students were required to submit letters of recommendation, write an essay and go through an interview.

Sixteen students made the cut.
