Mostly, this group recalls that Ranger reporters are students learning a new craft and, therefore, remain educators when they become sources.
Certificates were awarded during an ice cream social Tuesday in Loftin.
Here are the spring 2007 nominees and award winners.
The Informant
This award is in recognition of our most informative source, who never failed to take the time to explain every detail to student reporters and helped make sure the story was reported fully and accurately.
The nominees for "The Informant" are psychology Professor Dr. Pamela Hill; Kristina Lopez, research specialist in institutional effectiveness; John Strybos, director of facilities operations and construction management; Sgt. Mike Trujillo, Army ROTC Instructor; and Dr. Alice Johnson, dean of learning resources.
The winner is John Strybos.
The Dale Carnegie
This award is in recognition of these individuals' ability to win friends in the media and influence people through resulting news coverage.
The nominees for "The Dale Carnegie" are psychology Professor Dr. Pamela Hill; service learning Coordinator Audrey Grams; the dental assisting program; the Rev. Dr. David Semrad; math Professor Gerald Busald; and drug and alcohol abuse counseling Coordinator Dr. Edwin Bergen.
The winner is David Semrad.
Patience is a Virtue
This award is in recognition of our most patient sources, who each semester help season our reporters. Usually this source is subjected to multiple phone calls, sometimes daily.
Nominees for the "Patience is a Virtue" award are career guidance specialist Linda Moreno; John Strybos, director of facilities operations and construction management; President Robert Zeigler; Debbie Martinez, administrative assistant to the chancellor; Edith Casias, executive assistant to John Strybos; Robin Collett, administrative assistant to the president; and Hilda San Miguel, executive secretary to the vice president.
This year, we chose to honor individuals who make our reporting possible.
The winners are Debra Martinez, Edith Casias, Robin Collett and Hilda San Miguel.
Mother Hen
This award is in recognition of our most nurturing source, who takes budding reporters under a wing each semester to help them learn to cover a beat well. This source always remembers we are students first who often need help along the way.
The nominees for the "Mother Hen" award are Earlene Gonzales, director of the child development center; KSYM faculty adviser John Onderdonk; Counselor and Instructor Lisa Black; Dehlia Wallis, project director of Teaching Academy Learning Communities; and nursing program Coordinator Louise Burton.
The winner is Dehlia Wallis.
Booster Club
This award is in recognition of some of our biggest supporters, who encourage their students to read The Ranger each week and occasionally to write for the newspaper as well. The nominees in this group also have been frequently heard to compliment Ranger reporters on a job well done.
The nominees for the "Booster Club" award are business Professor and SIFE adviser Charles Hunt and the Students in Free Enterprise; English Instructor Jane Focht-Hansen; and District 9 trustee James Rindfuss.
The winner is James Rindfuss.
Defender of the Free Press
This special award is in recognition of our best defense. This source each semester defends and supports our Constitutional right to keep our community informed.
The nominees for "Defender of the Free Press" are President Robert Zeigler, political science Professor C. Woodward-Kaupert, English Instructor Jane Focht-Hansen and district legal counsel Martha McCabe.
The winner is Jane Focht-Hansen.
The Sure Thing
This award is in recognition of our most reliable source, who always returns phone calls in a timely manner. This source never needs to receive more than one phone message to get back to a reporter.
The nominees for "The Sure Thing" award are Dr. Pamela Hill, psychology professor; the district department of public safety; Suzanne Martinez, political science professor and Student Government adviser; and intramural specialist Sonya Bryant.
The winner is Sonya Bryant.
The Big Tipper
This award is in recognition of our most dedicated source of news tips. This source regularly calls or visits The Ranger to provide story ideas.
The nominees for "The Big Tipper" award are Dr. Thomas Billimek, psychology chair; Dr. Helen Vera, women's center coordinator; the Rev. Dr. David Semrad; RTF Professor Fred Weiss; Dr. Pamela Hill, psychology professor; and the English Department.
The winner is The English Department.
Forgive and Forget
This award is in recognition of our most forgiving source, who despite stories that are less than positive or reporters who are less than competent, continues to speak to Ranger reporters.
The nominees for the "Forgive and Forget" award are Housekeeping, Student Government Association, English Chair Alex Bernal and Cpl. Leonardo Nieves.
The winner is the Student Government Association.
Overexposed
This award is in recognition of newsmakers who patiently and repeatedly suffered through the training of Ranger photographers and were rewarded with frequent photos in The Ranger.
The nominees for the "Overexposed" award are the campus parking lots and KSYM.
The winner is Campus Parking Lots.
Underexposed
This award is in recognition of newsmakers who patiently and repeatedly suffered through the training of Ranger photographers but were seldom rewarded with photos in The Ranger.
The nominees for the "Underexposed" award are Faculty Senate and the Alamo Community College District board of trustees.
The winner is the Board of Trustees.
Piñata
This award recognizes newsmakers who take a beating but still deliver.
The nominees for the "Piñata" award are student life Director Jorge Posadas and Chancellor Bruce Leslie.
The award goes to Dr. Leslie.
This new award recognizes a source who may not have known the information we sought but always pointed us in the right direction.
The award goes to Associate Director of Records Donna Deming.
Eclipse
This award recognizes a source who raised the public's awareness of the need for Freedom of Information laws, also known as Sunshine laws.
The award goes to the Student Activity Fee Committee.
