The Ranger was named best nondaily college newspaper of the year by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors at the group's annual convention in San Antonio March 31.

"This was a very competitive category, and The Ranger does the most things best," wrote the contest judge, Mac McKerral, coordinator for news-editorial in the school of journalism and broadcasting at Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Ky.

Kristina Lindberg and César G. Rodriguez were editors of The Ranger during this contest period.

The organization honors two student publications each year, one in the nondaily and one in daily category. The Shorthorn at the University of Texas at Arlington was named best daily.

This is the sixth time the organization has recognized The Ranger, the first time in its smaller, tabloid-size format.

"Tab design poses challenges. And The Ranger does a good job on it," McKerral wrote. "Its images and graphics show a sensitivity to the need for visuals, even on inside tab pages."

The college newspaper, magazine and Web site were honored in two other spring contests.

In the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association competition for college newspapers and magazines, The Ranger collected a number of awards in competition against two- and four-year institutions.

In the special edition or section category, The Ranger won first place for "Recovering Lives," a collection of stories reported in East Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi four months after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Judges called it an outstanding job with strong stories and photos and praised the accompanying blog and Web site.

Felix Cerna earned a third-place award in the feature story category for his "Best of the Beatles," a profile of the popular KSYM Sunday morning show.

Cerna also won a first place in general column for "Life's Treasures," a recollection of a sapling he planted and returned to check on 20 years later.

"This is a column that was tended to over the years in the writer's mind and finally planted in the San Antonio College newspaper," the judges wrote. "It had grown gracefully, even majestically over time."

David Flores earned a first place in the picture story category for "Beauty Queens," coverage of a local drag pageant.

Adnan S. Khan collected a third place in in-depth reporting for "Racial slurs" that detailed a fight in the gym.

Diego A. Rios earned two third-place awards in the feature photo and sports feature photo categories for "Belly lesson" and "Match point."

Julio Borjón won a third-place award for his editorial cartoon "Parking" and an honorable mention for his information graphic "What kind of voter are you?"

In feature page design, Mary Zamora earned an honorable mention for "Fashion show."

The Fourth Write magazine earned two honorable mentions awards.

Charles Cima, Manuel Durán and Liza Rodriguez were honored in the picture story category for "Protest 2006" on continuing demonstrations about the immigration debate.

Amber Whittaker was awarded for her story "Lost in the flood" in the news feature category.

Awards for colleges and universities in Texas and Oklahoma were presented at the Region 8 convention of the Society of Professional Journalists in Clear Lake March 31.

The Ranger was awarded second place for Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper published fewer than four times per week.

The Ranger also won second place in the best affiliated Web site category for theranger.org.

In the magazine nonfiction category, Kristina Lindberg won third place for her article "Restoring Friendship," the tale of Vietnam veterans building hospitals where they once fought.
