As of January 2006, the district implemented a rule that says any district employee who wishes to drive a district vehicle must take a defensive driving course.
Since its implementation, about 200 employees have taken the course, Roderick "Roy" Brown, district safety coordinator, said.
The six-hour course, taught by Brown, is offered once a month.
The next day to take the course is May 17. Employees must sign up two weeks in advance.
To sign up, employees must show a valid drivers license.
The classes last from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Room 100 at the ATC Building at Kelly USA.
To register, employees may call 593-7244 or e-mail mfrias@accd.edu.
The course also can be used to get a discount on employees' personal car insurance.
The district motor pool also will have a list of employees who have received a defensive driving course certificate, meaning that only those who have passed the course will be allowed to rent vehicles.
President Robert Zeigler has not taken the defensive driving course but said that the course is beneficial.
"From an insurance perspective, there are better rates and it reduces the risk."
Chief of district police Don Adams took the course and found it to be useful. He recommends for everyone to take the course even though they may not have to use a district vehicle because it keeps people well-informed and safe. "It's common for people to get in automatic mode, they don't think about their surrounding," Adams said.
Adams also mentioned that it is useful because most automobile insurance companies give the driver a 10 percent discount if they have passed the class.
Adams is very supportive of the district policy. "The more we train, the better we do."
