The opening of the Seguir Adelante Community Center in January has led to a slight increase in the nontraditional student population.

Nontraditional students are often referred to as students who are generally over the age of 25 or those who are re-entry students, said Dr. Helen Vera, chair of services for women and nontraditional students.

In 2003, the women's center at this college was given a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development of about $594,000 to renovate and expand a small building at Evergreen and Howard streets.

It is now the Seguir Adelante Community Center and offers a fresh start for people who have been out of college a while and those who have never attended, Abby Gonzalez, the center's director, said Monday.

All the services are free.

The Seguir Adelante Community Center is geared to getting more people the "pre-college" skills needed to succeed at a college or university, such as Internet, basic computer skills and résumé writing.

The Seguir Adelante Community Center is working in conjunction with the women's center at this college. The community center offers a few computer classes along with workshops for writing essays and assistance with the Texas Common Application to apply to any public college in Texas and the the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The center also offers workshops students are encouraged to attend. "Scholarship Search Workshop" will be from 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m. Sept. 21. "Essay Writing Tips Workshop" will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 27.

The center hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. The center closes from noon-1 p.m. each day.

For information on workshops, call 733-2580. Seating is limited to only 10 students per workshop.

The Seguir Adelante Community Center is at 703 Howard.
