At its Sept. 5 meeting, the first of the semester, this college's Faculty Senate began positioning itself to keep an eye on upcoming issues such as program review, a compensation study and, in particular, this college's sovereign status within the district.
The senate - whose function is to represent faculty, make suggestions concerning college and district policy and appoint faculty representatives to college and district governance committees - seems to have added monitoring the progress of district policy-making to their responsibilities.
It was only a semester ago when the district decided that the Alamo Community College District should instead be referred to as the Alamo Community Colleges, sparking many concerns about the college's individual status.
For instance, music Chair Jessica Howard suggested that it would be beneficial to this college's enrollment if we removed courses at the Northeast Campus from this college's bulletin.
"We had students come to our department this week saying that they wanted to make changes because they inadvertently took classes at the Northeast Campus," philosophy Professor Richard Oliver said.
An agenda item from the Banner Project Stakeholders' Aug. 30 meeting, prepared by Jacquelyn Kyle, district director of Banner Implementation projects, mentions "one common database for all colleges," "one GPA" and "one ACC transcript," which implies to the senate that, in the future, transcripts may no longer feature the name of the individual colleges.
Kyle said that these ideas came from the board and the chancellor around three years ago, but she also mentioned that the "one ACC transcript" will still include the names of individual colleges.
The senate also is uneasy about the Banner Project Stakeholders, which only includes one Faculty Senate member, and that member is from Northeast Lakeview College, the newest in the district.
President Robert Zeigler had addressed the issue to Faculty Senate chair Terry Walch before, stating that Chancellor Bruce Leslie has no intention of creating a single college.
