With construction under way in three former student lots, finding a parking spot, especially in the morning, remains a problem for students and employees this semester.
John Strybos, associate vice chancellor of facilities, said the new parking garage should be open by January.
Campus police officers have been issuing about 50 tickets per day, Adrian Plata, department of public safety clerk, said.
Cpl. Leonardo Nieves, campus coordinator for the department of public safety, said that most of these violations were for illegally parking by fire lanes, parking in faculty lots and parking on the grass by Luther's Burger Joint, at the corner of Main Avenue and Evergreen Street.
Nieves said that the students still get a 30-minute grace period to move the vehicles.
"We will try to pull the students' schedule from the vehicle's license plate or parking tag," Nieves said.
"Then we will attempt to contact the student in the classroom and notify them that they have 30 minutes to move their vehicle or it will be towed away."
Nieves added that the officers and security personnel have not been issuing a lot of tickets because they are trying to take into consideration that there is a lot of confusion among the students and faculty members in the first two weeks of the semester regarding the parking issue.
"Not many people use the satellite lots that the college has provided as a solution to the problem although there are VIA shuttles that go around every 15 minutes and it's free with a student's ID," Nieves said. "It is also part of our duty to patrol these lots just like the campus ones."
The Finesilver lot under Interstate 35 and Quincy Street has full-time security and yet it is half-way full at best, Nieves said.
District Police Sgt. Robert Tomlinson said faculty members are not allowed to park in student parking.
"After 5 p.m. students and faculty can park anywhere they want," he added.
Tomlinson said that students will get towed by private vendors for parking at the Family Dollar Store, the Methodist Student Center, across from Loftin Student Center and the Zebra video store, on Main Avenue and Dewey Place.
There have been several complaints that the new parking stickers peel off easily, Tomlinson said.
Tim Rockey, dean of continuing education, said in case of the parking decal being stolen, the student can go to the business office and request a new one.
"Convertibles' owners need to put the stickers on the body under the rear window," Tomlinson added.
Nieves said the stickers were the idea of Chancellor Bruce Leslie.
Parking Lots 1 and 2 will not be available because of Jewish High Holy Days from
noon-11 p.m. Sept. 21 and from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 4.
