Students are needed to participate in intramural sporting events this fall.

Intramural sports, or sports that are set up through student life, hold events such as 3-on-3 basketball and swim meets throughout a semester.

"I think this will offer opportunities for release from stress," student life Director Jorge Posadas said. "Also, for those students who have a lot of talent, it is a way for them to show that without putting much work and time into a team."

For students to participate in the events they must present a college ID to student life and sign up at least one day prior to the event. They must also sign a liability waiver form.

Posadas said he hopes to bring students together in a nonacademic way through these sports.

"It's a brief escape of the pressure of being a college student," he said.

In the past, Posadas felt that the student life office did not offer as many intramural events as it could have.

"We want to set up memories that will last longer," he said. "When people look back, it's not the classes they will remember, it's the clubs, sports and events they participated in."

Faculty and staff also are invited to participate in events.

"When faculty participates, it gives students an opportunity to see them in a different light," he said.

On Sept. 11, student life held its first intramural event of the semester, a Hot Shots competition in the mall, where students had to consecutively shoot basketballs into a hoop.

The winner, Derek Guajarado, shot 24 baskets in a row.

If a student does win an intramural event, student life will reward them with an I-Pod shuffle worth $80.

"I want students to look forward to and participate in competitions," Posadas said. "The allure for students has to be more."

Some of the intramural events will be in the mall, so competitors can have a bigger space to compete.

He recalled an incident when student life used to have a ping-pong table, one that they would not put out for students to play on.

They were afraid of the damage that the table would receive from the students, such as losing paddles and breaking nets.

He said they would not replace the items that were damaged because they felt they did not have enough money.

"Now we're not afraid of the wear and tear," he said. "We can consistently provide to our students."

Students will be able to enjoy a ping-pong competition on Monday from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. in the Loftin game area.

Other events include video games, such as: Smash Brothers on Oct. 5, Dance Dance Revolution on Oct. 30 and Halo on Nov. 16. All of these events will be in the Loftin game area.

Other sporting events include tennis on Sept. 24-25 at the tennis courts and 6-on-6 flag football on Nov. 5 on the Bennett house grounds.

For a full schedule of intramural events and their locations, check the student life Web site or go to student life in Room 152 of Loftin.
