Education freshman Ashley Moreno is one of seven new cheerleaders added to this college's cheerleading roster at the tryouts Saturday and Sunday in Loftin.

The lack of sleep, pressures of school or the 10 a.m. practice did not seem to wear down the 12 students who participated in the fall cheerleading tryouts Sept. 8 in Loftin Student Center.

Ten cheer squad members and Coach Peter Aguirre joined the hopefuls and all participated in a two-hour practice in which the dozen students learned three different routines: cheer, dance and fight song.

"Cheerleaders serve a purpose as ambassadors to the school," Aguirre said. "We add some sparkle and energy to performances and amplify the situations that need to be exciting."

They separated into three teams and spent about 20-30 minutes practicing each routine.

In one section, the fight song music blared as the students attempted to get the timing and technique of the routine correct.

Another section played Ciara's "Get Up" as two members of the cheer squad and Aguirre showed the hopefuls how to perfect the complex dance routine.

Last, students opened the cheer segment with a shout "Let's get loud!" and finished off with jumps and tumbles.

"I was pretty nervous," education freshman Ashley Moreno said. "I did pretty good in my jumps, so after that I felt pretty confident."

Moreno was one of the few that attempted to hold her balance in the air and fall down into the arms of the other cheerleaders. This was her first attempt at making the cheer squad.

Vanessa Silva, business marketing and fashion merchandising sophomore and returning cheerleader, said she would like to have students more aware of the cheer squad and the work they put into it.

"We want to branch out and let it be known that SAC has cheerleaders," she said.

On Sept. 9, nine hopefuls arrived at Loftin at 9 a.m. to practice the dance, cheer and fight song routines with the returning cheerleaders and Aguirre.

The tryouts started at 10 a.m. and only eight of the 12 that were at the practice the day before returned. One girl who did not make it to the practice the day before showed up for the tryout.
