As you begin reading an interesting story in the newspaper, does it disturb you when you are referred to the Web site to read more information about the story online?

Have you ever wondered why not all stories are published in the newspapers and published only online?

Dean Betz, content director for the Houston Chronicle Web site, www.chron.com, said advertisements determine the size of the newspapers, meaning how many stories will fit.

Stories published online have an advantage because audio and video clips are provided for readers, Betz said.

"The readers expect to read the news right away. Readers can have access to stories online," he said.

Another advantage are blogs. Blogs are provided for readers and allow a reader to comment on stories.

"The Internet has so much space, and many stories can be published," Betz said.

A disadvantage is some readers might feel "cheated" because the information is not provided in the print version.

For example, a story published in the newspaper might have a video clip to view and this is why the story will refer the reader to the online Web site, he said.

"We are not trying to withhold things from our readers," he said, adding the Internet allows the media to publish news that does not meet the print deadline, and it allows the readers to have access to the news 24 hours a day.
