If you happen to be walking in Loftin Student Center, you're probably aware that the dining tables in front of the cafeteria are gone and the area is taped off. You might be aware also that the information desk is missing and surrounded by a large plastic cover.

The reason is the student center has begun its long-awaited renovation.

As reported in The Ranger last fall, the Student Services Activity Fee Committee approved $175,000 from the student activity fee to renovate the student center.

Some 203 students voted for a design for the renovation of the student center, which was created by students in ARCH 2470, Architecture Design 3.

On Sept. 12, the office of student life hosted a meeting to discuss the latest on the renovation project. Those present at the meeting were architect Aaron Clark of Durand-Hollis Rupe Architects Inc., Architecture Design 3 students, facilities management, the facilities office and the office of student life, said student life Director Jorge Posadas.

They did some introductions, covered legal issues about contractors expectations, talked about phasing in parts of the building so that student services are not disrupted and covered general rules from the district about demolition safety, Posadas said.

Cuts also were made. Originally, students had designed a reflective ceiling but because of a review of the existing ceiling, which was replaced only a few years ago and still in good shape, the decision to cut the reflective ceiling was made, Clark said.

Another cut was a planned cable and glass staircase which was reported to cost about $60,000, Posadas said.

"We'll keep the old one for a little bit; we'll just paint it real nice," Posadas said jokingly.

Overall, what the architecture students had envisioned and the design the student body had voted on will stay pretty true, Posadas said.

Clark seconded that.

This year an additional $69,000 was approved by the Student Activity Fee Committee for the renovation.

Although a large amount of the funding for the renovation came from the student activity fee, John Strybos, director of construction for the Alamo Community College District, helped find funds to cover a lot of things that went over budget, Posadas said.
