A new dawn is on the educational horizon, and it's called the Early College High School Initiative.

This initiative is the idea and concept that "challenge and not remediation" can make the difference for young students who are least likely to enroll in and attend college, and to whom society has placed low expectations and aspirations for academic achievement, according to the Web site, www.earlycolleges.org.

The Early College High School Initiative, which began in 2002, is designed to enable students to earn a high school diploma and an associate degree or two years of college credits to enter into a four-year college or program as a junior or senior and work toward a bachelor's degree, Kathleen Johnson, director of community and public relations at Northeast Lakeview College, said.

These schools are intended to assist low-income students, first-time-in-college students, English language learners, students of color and students underrepresented in higher education to achieve academic success, Johnson said.

The Early College High School is an autonomous high school on a college or university campus, within a larger high school, or on an independent campus that is partnered with the postsecondary institution.

These institutions have entered into an agreement that addresses the budget of the school, the sources of revenue and the responsibilities of each partner for the specific costs related to the Early College High School, according to documents provided by the Texas Education Agency.

"This initiative is so important to the development of academic achievements for those students that don't have the means or the ways to pay tuition and attend college," Johnson said.

It also provides students with an entry point into a high-skills career, Johnson said.

The projected plan for this Early College High School Initiative is slated to begin construction March 2008, and be completed and opened by July or August 2009 on the campus of the new Northeast Lakeview College, which is under construction at Kitty Hawk and Loop 1604, Johnson said.
