Bruce Davidson, the San Antonio Express-News editorial page editor, said, "Editorials are the institutional voice of a newspaper."
Robert Seltzer, associate editorial page editor, said it is very important that editorials are not signed because it is not the view of one person but of the whole newspaper combined.
"Editorials give a position on certain issues," Seltzer said.
For example, if the newspaper supports a certain politician, the editorial page gives them an opportunity to write about it.
Editorials give a stance and explain why they take that stance, Seltzer said. Sometimes editorials give the opposite side of the issue, but they don't have to.
Editorials can be important to readers because they can educate the reader about the different views and opinions that they might otherwise not be exposed to. "It's our responsibility as voters to be as knowledgeable as possible. This is our way of presenting issues to the people," Seltzer said. "It's up to them. We guide them to make their own discussion."
Editorials don't always have to be about a serious subject, Davidson said. He explained that a while back the Express-News wrote an editorial poking fun at a city ordinance that was trying to outlaw baggy pants.
Seltzer explained that the way editorials come about is through discussion in an editorial board meeting.
Whether editorials make people think about an issue or muse about the day, they are the staple of the daily newspaper that is just as important as any lead news story.
