At about 40-percent complete, this college's new parking garage is expected to open for parking by the beginning of the spring semester.

After considering parking spaces lost to the development of the new garage and two new buildings, the garage, with a capacity of 1,100 parking spaces, will give this college a net gain of 400 parking spaces.

It's not so clear, however, just who is gaining the new spaces.

A Parking Committee chaired by Tim Rockey, dean of continuing education and workforce development, is holding an open meeting today for the first time, at 10 a.m. in Room 323 of Fletcher Administration Center to begin discussing who should be allowed to park in the new garage: just students, just faculty or a mix of both.

Implementing a special garage-parking fee to solve the problem while generating revenue was suggested to President Robert Zeigler at a Sept. 19 Faculty Senate meeting.

"I would have to think really hard about raising parking fees for people to park in the garage," Zeigler said.

"The garage was built with bond money, you know. It's not being funded privately. I kind of think that, in terms of fairness, people who come here and pay their parking fee ought to have a chance to park wherever it is."

The Parking Committee has faculty, staff and student representation, Zeigler said.

Another committee is being formed to plan for future capital improvement projects that will potentially be funded by a new bond issue.

The president said that the committee will be looking four or five years ahead.
