Yet, that lead was diminished when the lack of communication between team members allowed Rice to dominate in the second half, scoring four points to win the game 4-1.
Coach Rodney Cardenas said the biggest problem with the game was that the defense did not do well.
"The defense collapsed," Cardenas said. "We had injuries in two key players and for a team to be winning 1-0 in the first half and for the other team to score four goals in 17 minutes, I would say it's pretty obvious what happened."
This is the first semester Cardenas is coaching the team. He has been a private trainer for 20 years, but this is the first time he has been a coach at a college.
"I hope to get the chemistry of the team together," Cardenas said. "The players are new and I'm new, so the chemistry is not there. It's something that has to be developed. After that, failure is not an option."
He said if the players can improve on their chemistry, such as knowing their teammates' habits and skill, they will improve.
"I think they are best at having fun," Cardenas said. "They focus on having a good time. They show fun and seriousness at practice. Yet, at game time, it's pure seriousness. They know when a sense of urgency needs to be displayed."
Friday, they lost to UT-Austin 3-0.
