In recent weeks, faculty club advisers have been meeting to discuss their concerns and issues about the office of student life.

"We had felt a need to get together informally and talk about our experiences as faculty advisers in relation to dealing with the office of student life, dealing with the activity fee committee process and some concerns we had about it," said government professor and Student Government Association adviser Suzanne Martinez.

The meetings also serve the purpose of building a network of communication among the faculty advisers, Martinez said.

The first meeting took place Sept. 17, and the second, Sept. 24. Fifteen advisers attended the first meeting, and 10 or 11 attended the second, Martinez said.

Since many of the advisers have similar concerns, Martinez found it easier to get everyone together to articulate their thoughts and present them to student life Director Jorge Posadas.

On Monday, Martinez met with Posadas, but she would not comment on the meeting.

Posadas was unavailable to comment Thursday afternoon.

"We are just moving forward," Martinez said.

Advisers are set to meet with Emma Mendiola, interim dean of student affairs, at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 15 in the employee lounge in Loftin Student Center to discuss their frustrations with student life.

The advisers did not formulate the list of concerns to talk nastily about the office of student life, Martinez said. The advisers simply want to make the situation between the office of student life and student organizations better, Martinez said.

Many faculty advisers agree that there are some inconsistencies and risks with some student life procedures and processes, as well as some wording issues with documents.

English Instructor Jane Focht-Hansen said it is sometimes difficult to accomplish anything for the Cheshyre Cheese Club because activity fee processes can be time-consuming.

Focht-Hansen said that the faculty advisers are frustrated and upset because they want to understand student life.
