Learning how to do research and how to use the services available in the library is now easier and free.

Palo Alto College offers the Information Research Certificate 1 program, which serves as a tool for helping students by teaching research skills and also serves as an additional method for faculty to encourage students to stay enrolled and excel in classes.

The program is available for all students enrolled in the Alamo Community College District, lead librarian Camille F. Fiorillo said.

Palo Alto just recently started this project as a pilot for English 1301, Freshman Composition 1, Dr. Mary-Ellen Jacobs, English chair, said in a phone interview Sept. 25.

"We are just trying this out to see how it goes," she said.

Reservations are required for each class, and seats are limited to 30 students per session, Fiorillo said.

Students interested in reserving a seat need to sign up at the reference desk or call 921-5087.

The seven classes will be offered more than once throughout the semester and at different times. The schedule for the Information Research Certificate Program can be found at www.accd.edu/pac/lrc/ircpgm.htm.

"Students can sign up for a class that fits into their schedule," she said.

Each class is 50 minutes long in the learning resource center in Room 200 of Ozuna at Palo Alto College.

Classes offered are Introduction to Research, Catalog and E-books, Electronic Databases, Web Research, Information Evaluation, MLA Documentation and APA Documentation, Fiorillo said.

For students to earn the certificate, they must complete the seven classes, she said.

Class 1 is Introduction to Research.

"Introduction to Research is general orientation to the library, physical orientation, description of our services and what we can do in general to help students be successful," she said.

The second class is Catalog and E-books, or electronic books.

This class teaches students how to use the online catalog and how to search by author, title, keyword and subject, she said.
