Last spring, the Student Activity Fee Committee approved a budget of $419,736 for the 2007-08 school year.

So far $95,672.71 has been allocated to several student groups and organizations, leaving a remaining balance of $9,063.29 for the remainder of the year.

In reality students have $39,000 available to them, student life Director Jorge Posadas said.

The extra $30,000 comes from the unanticipated expenses budget that was approved by the Student Activity Committee last spring, Posadas said.

One example Posadas illustrated of how money from the unanticipated expenses could be used is, in the event that the speech team or basketball team needs more money because of advancing in competitions, the money would come out of there.

The committee from last year also approved a budget of $180,000 for campuswide events, $69,000 for student center equipment and supplies and $36,000 for staff.

Tyler Archer, assistant coordinator of student leadership and activities, is the staff member from the office of student life receiving the $36,000 from the budget, which includes benefits, Posadas said.

Out of the $95,672.71 distributed, almost half, $47,560, was approved for organizations associated with the theater and speech communication department.

The speech team is receiving $17,560 to cover registration, hotel, meal and transportation costs for multiple competitions.

This year, they will be in 12 tournaments, including two national tournaments.

"It's just a running budget," said speech Instructor and forensic team adviser Jolinda Ramsey.

The budget is funded by student life this year. Previously, it was funded by the departmental budget, Ramsey said.

The On Stage Drama Club is receiving $10,000 to go to London.

Ten students were funded to go, and the money will cover all travel expenses such as transportation, hotel and food, as well as workshop costs, said adviser and theater Instructor Paula Rodriguez.
