The health of Mother Earth, or La Madre Tierra, has garnered much debate, especially with the success of Al Gore's campaign to inform people about global warming with his movie "An Inconvenient Truth."

Hence, four Latino MacArthur Fellowship winners, who call themselves Los MacArturos, are taking up that debate with "Honoring La Madre Tierra" from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today in Room 120 of the visual arts center.

MacArthur Fellowships, granted by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, give talented and creative individuals a $500,000 stipend over the span of five years to give them the financial freedom to pursue creative projects, according to the MacArthur Foundation Web site.

Oscar San Miguel, community outreach coordinator of the Family Learning Academy, said the Dream Circle, inspired by Native American gatherings in which participants congregated in circles, will give the community a chance to engage in a conversation with four highly accomplished people on a topic of great importance.

He said the four MacArturos are Camilo José Vergara, 2002 recipient and photographer who published "American Ruins," documenting degraded urban settings; 1990 recipient and community activist Maria Varela; John Jesurun, playwright and director of plays such as "Black Maria" and "Deep Sleep" and 1996 recipient; and 1983 recipient and University of Chicago history Professor Ramón Gutiérrez.

They will discuss the Native American tradition of caring for the Earth and environmental issues facing San Antonio.

This is the 10th annual meeting in San Antonio of Los MacArturos, and San Miguel said they will be conducting Dream Circles throughout San Antonio.

He said this college is the only community college that will host a Dream Circle.

Other colleges hosting Dream Circles include "Heroes and Saints: Looking Backward and Forward" 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Trinity University; "Dreaming of a Space of Our Own" 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Our Lady of the Lake University; and "Latin@ Genius: Our Visions" 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the downtown campus at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
