First anniversary gifts are traditionally paper. Common gifts include artwork, love letters, books, cards, stationary and life insurance policies.

So if you haven't already sent a remembrance of Chancellor Bruce Leslie's one-year anniversary in the Alamo Community College District, start wrapping.

Leslie's contract with the district began Nov. 1, 2006, and ends Aug. 31, 2009. The contract includes a rollover section stating, "On Sept. 1, 2008, this contract shall automatically be extended for an additional two years, through Aug. 31, 2011, unless the board, on behalf of the district, notifies the chancellor in writing on or before Sept. 1, 2008, of its decision not to extend the contract."

At the Oct. 16 board meeting, an executive session agenda item stated, "The board will deliberate the contract and compensation of Dr. Bruce H. Leslie, the Chancellor." No motion was made at the reconveyance of the open meeting.

In an e-mail, board chair Roberto Zárate said the board was pleased with Leslie's performance. "He has brought his expertise and professional knowledge to bear on programs and initiatives that we believe will move the Alamo Community Colleges to recognition and leadership among the community college community at the state and national level," he said. "The future of the district is in good hands,"

Leslie collects an annual salary of $290,000 with a $30,000 deferred compensation to be paid if he remains employed by the district until Oct. 31, 2009.

The trustees will need to search a little further to find an anniversary present for Leslie; his contract already stipulates that the district will purchase and pay for a life insurance policy for him worth two times his annual salary.

Timepieces are the proscribed gift on the modern scale. Perhaps those employee time clocks we keep hearing about.
