Since 1995 the president's office has offered students a chance at giving themselves a Christmas present.

One student will be able to do just that.

Lauren Peña, a digital design freshman, has won the President's Christmas Card invitation design contest for the president's annual Christmas gathering for faculty and staff.

Her prize is a $500 scholarship toward tuition and fees for the spring semester at this college.

The card will be used as the Christmas invitation for the President's annual Christmas gathering, a brunch held from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Dec 7 in Koehler Cultural Center.

The scholarship will be presented to Peña at the gathering which she is allowed to attend with a few of her own guests.

Robin Collett, administrative assistant to the president and contest coordinator, said the office received 17 entries.

A panel of judges composed of faculty members and President Robert Zeigler, evaluated the cards and decided which one would be best to use.

"We want it to be easily recognized that it was from SAC," Collett said.

The card displays a white background scattered with snowflakes with a traditional Christmas tree adorned with colorful balls and the text "Happy Holidays" across the bottom.

There are a lot of generic Christmas cards, and some were nice, but the judges wanted the winning entry to stand out and say it was from SAC, Collett said.

Peña used Adobe Illustrator CS2 to create her piece of art.

She played around with graphics on the computer for about four hours and came up with her final product, she said.

"I had a lot of fun working on it," Peña said.

Peña pays her own tuition.

"It is good that I have this money so I can save for more supplies," Peña said.

The chancellor's office is inviting students of the Alamo Community College District to submit entries for an original, animated holiday card to be sent electronically to hundreds of individuals as the official ACCD card. The winner will be awarded $500 from the ACCD Foundation at the December monthly board meeting Dec. 11.
